He looks like he is thinking very intently about his life choices...which is great! I love your style, it is very classic storybook, especially with the rough lines and shading style. The choice of colors makes it look really vintage and beautiful, very suitable for a pirate story. However, while the seemingly stray lines are part of the style, I find that there are a little too many on his elbow. It can get a little distracting especially because it is in front and at the center of the picture.
You did really well with the shading of his clothes and face, but the shadow of the chess board on the table surface is a little awkward. It looks slanted like a table edge but then not really...May be you would like to decide whether to make it flat like the rest of the sides or a clear-cut slant/edge. Uhh I hope you understand what I'm talking about
He does look quite thoughtful. Perhaps he is also wondering where all those black pieces have gotten to. I suspect it's hard to keep chess pieces where they belong on a ship at sea. I hope they turn up. Though if they don't, it might be interesting to see what odds and ends the pirates would come up with to replace them.
As always, I really like the way you color blonde hair! It is subtle and looks so naturalistic. Also, Dimitri is wearing far more clothes here than he has been wont to of late. Just saying.

Overall, I love it! And love the symbolism too
