Gabriel and Imogene, two of the main characters in the swashbuckler novel I am rewriting. They have left the comfort of thier pirate ship and are about to challenge her uncle and assert Imogene's claim to the throne. Also expose a murder and try not to get killed. A huge spoiler has just occured and Imogene does not want to go on, but Gabriel tells her that they must.

I did the watercolors in this picture using milk instead of water after reading "milk and watercolors" as the medium for illustrations in a childrens book. I think it turned out lighter and smoother than it usually does with water.

Huh, interesting. I'd be way afraid of using milk as a paint medium like this cause of the possibility of the smell/mold factor, but it may very well be fine. Keep me informed, I'm very curious! I wonder if the fat content accounts for the smoother paint application - or did you use skim?

Now on to the picture -

Gabe really looks like he's searching for inspiration for the right words of comfort for Imogene. I get the impression from his body language that he's uncomfortable being put in this position - maybe because he's encouraging Imogene, who is really still a child, to do something very dangerous? He knows what has to be done, but he has mixed feelings about it too? It's an interesting situation leading to some interesting expressions.

Poor Imogene. I've gotten used to seeing her being rather dauntless in the past, so this vulnerable, childlike side is a new facet to her character.

Have been meaning to reply to this for days. I did use skim milk. I will have to experement with other fat contents later, perhaps.

It's still not smelly. I just sniffed it.

Anyway thanks for so much attention to the picture. I think Gabriel is pretty uncomfortable. Gabriel does not like playing the hero. I think he likes it even less than he likes being dragged along on other people's adventures.

I am glad that you have seen more adventerous Imogenes than sad worried ones anyway. I like the rambuctious part of her character way better than the emo part.

Well, skim milk is pretty gross so I'm glad you found a better use for it.

I loved Gabriel the most at this part of the story. He's very good at being himself and giving comfort. Poor Isme needed it right then.

The milk and watercolor thing really worked out, I like it a lot. Was it very hard?

Actually it was way easier...I am just afraid everything is going to start to smell now.

I have Gabe on the brain right now so you are going to be seeing a lot of him I am afraid

The colours are wonderful! I think the milk does make a difference. :D I always love the mood of your work - you can capture emotions so well in your pictures. I wonder, though, how it might look if your lines were a little cleaner? I realize that this is very much your style, but I find having fewer lines in a picture really gives the work a more polished look. Either way, it's a great piece!

I know what you mean, I have been working on that little problem for a while. When I ink something and take the sketchlines out in makes it look flat and, usually, kinda funky. I guess I am not good enough to know where the one line should go yet.

Thanks for the great comments. I am glad the colors came out well!

Ah, I understand :D I felt the same way for a long time. I feel though, that maybe varying line thickness can help - it still keeps the illusion of more than one line, but technically it IS one line. I don't know if that helps at all, but I found it useful! Good luck on your other 100 themes!
